the answer is do both. for example, when i write, i write what i know will appeal to the intended audience...if i dont, then what is the purpose of writing if i am intending to sell my work? i consider human nature, and i write with that in mind. i also write for myself in two ways. one way is that i write clean. i am a screenwriter...if whomever buys my movie and wants to "spice it up" that is their right, they own it. but while i am writing it, i write it clean. the other way i write for myself is i put myself in the audience. i ask myself if what i am writing would keep me in that seat or bore me to tears. while i am writing i see in my mind scenes as though they were being played out on the big screen. this helps me determine whether a scene works or not. all in all you cant just write for yourself nor can you just write for the audience or reader. to have a well rounded story it should be written for both.
